How to Paint Brick

Many people like the aesthetic of painted brick for the exterior structures. Painting your brick gives it an even texture and color. Also, painted brick gives it a protective coating against the elements and erosion. But if you have decided that you want to paint your brick then here are a few steps to take to make sure that it is done successfully.

Tools

First, you will need to gather the right tools and materials to paint your brick. The tools you need include basic painting tools like paint brushes, paint rollers, drop cloths and painter’s tape. The materials that you will need for painting the brick are latex primer and latex paint designed specifically for masonry painting. You can find masonry paint easily at the hardware store or ask a masonry contractor if you still aren’t sure which paint to use. Optionally, you can also get trisodium phosphate which is helpful for cleaning brick. But be careful to use glove and eye protection if you choose it use it.

Prep

To paint brick you need to start with a clean surface. Wash the brick thoroughly with soap and water and scrub the surface with a wire brush. It’s important to make sure that you let the brick dry completely before you start painting. During prep is also the time to inspect your brick for any significant cracks that could indicate a structural issue. You can always mark off a problem section to be looked at by a professional later while you continue with the rest of the painting.

Paint

Finally, you can begin painting. Begin with the latex primer, which you will apply to the entire area. You should let the primer dry completely, then you can add a second coat of primer if you want. This is also the opportunity to fill in smaller cracks in the brick with acrylic caulk. Then you can brush or roll on your masonry paint as normal. Keep in mind that if you are painting a fireplace then you should use heatproof paint.
